Sleeping

As you make your bed, so you must lie in it. Personally I like to sleep comfortably and long, which is why I make few compromises in this area.

Clove Hitch

The clove hitch is a knot used to attach a line to an object. This knot is excellent for attaching a cord to a peg or stick so that it can be released quickly when taking down.

Knots

Knots can make life on the trail much easier, but learning knots is always tedious. So here I give an overview of the knots I use frequently. I use a handful of knots that are easy to learn and provide added value on trips.

Half-Pyramid

The half-pyramid is the setup variant that protects best against wind & weather. This weather protection is from above and from three sides. Rectangular tarps are particularly well suited for implementation.

Diamond

In the diamond setup, three corners are fixed to the ground with pegs, while the last corner is tied up high with a stick or to a tree.

This setup variant is excellent when wind predominantly comes from one direction.

Tarps

The tarpaulin - or tarp for short - is a rectangular, sometimes also square sheet that has guy-out points at the corners and edges. A tarp is the lightest way to protect yourself from rain and wind, but requires the most knowledge when setting it up.

Shelter

To protect yourself from wind, weather and insects at night on a trip, you need a shelter on the trail.

The most common shelters are tents, but there are also approaches that are more minimalist.

A-Frame

The A-frame is the best-known setup variant. Here, the tarp is pitched in the shape of an "A". This form of tarp setup offers good protection from above. When the sides of the tarp are guyed out all the way to the ground, there is also good protection from two opposite sides.
