I'm always out and about with technology. Usually this only refers to my smartphone and flashlight and occasionally a compact camera, but these devices need power to function. Here I will present my concepts for power supply on the go.

App for Navigation with a Smartphone - OsmAnd+

Over the last few years I have repeatedly dedicated myself to GPS navigation with a smartphone. The accuracy required for determining location is quite sufficient for hiking with current models. Since I myself have only been using Android-based smartphones for several years, I will only refer to those in this article. OsmAnd+ is now also available for iOS, but whether this app offers an identical range of features as the Android version is not known to me.

During this time I tested Maps.me, Gaia GPS, Locus Maps, Google Maps and Orux among others for their suitability for hiking and trekking. Yet for over a year now I have ended up using solely OsmAnd+ for this use case and wouldn't want to do without it. So that you don't have to go through the same process, let me introduce you to my favorite and go into detail on the features I have come to appreciate the most.

Power Supply on the Go 3 - Solar on Tour

When out hiking or trekking there are several ways to ensure the power supply of navigation, camera, smartphone, lamp and so on. On the one hand it is possible to take spare rechargeable batteries for each device. On the other hand there are also models of all these devices that can be charged via USB. In this case the supply on tour would only need to be secured from one power outlet as a charging option to the next. With a power bank the required time gap to the power grid can be extended. This is the most frequently chosen method for trekking and especially for ultralight trekking. Nevertheless solar panels offer another option independent of the power grid.
