For a restful sleep, there is hardly anything more important than finding a dry spot at night. If you always carry your sleeping quarters with you on a trip, you can at least assume that.

Here I will present a few products that have convinced me recently.

ZPacks Triplex

After the last big holidays were marked by catastrophic weather or the like, I thought for a long time about what I could have done differently to make the trips more pleasant.

The SMD Deschutes is a mix of a pyramid-shaped shelter (called a mid) and a hexagonal base area. The tarptent has no floor, but it does have a roughly 30cm wide mosquito net that runs all the way around from the shelter walls down to the ground. This screens you surprisingly well from the blood-sucking critters. For me, at 1.72m, this tarptent has proven itself in just about any weather.

ZPacks Tarps

ZPacks is an American manufacturer that handcrafts tarps and other ultralight gear from light materials such as Cuben Fiber. This is an extremely light and tear-resistant material used for the sails of racing yachts. Over the past years I have ordered two rectangular Cuben Fiber tarps from ZPacks and found them good.
