The Perfect Sleeping Pad

Even after searching for years for the perfect sleeping pad for me, I still haven't found it. While every sleeping pad I tested had strengths, the following weaknesses were hardly acceptable to me:

  • Draft
  • Too loud
  • Too cold
  • Too heavy
  • Too bulky
  • Too fragile
  • Too small
  • Too big
  • Too high
  • Too low

After careful consideration I came to the conclusion that I have to combine different models with each other to use their advantages and eliminate their disadvantages.

Since I sleep best on self-inflating sleeping pads, I used a 1.20m long model as a base. At the foot end I attached two KAM snaps with cuben tape so that I can attach a short foam sleeping pad to the self-inflating one. At the head end of the self-inflating sleeping pad I glued two D-rings to which I can attach a pillow. The components look like this:

With this combination my upper body lies comfortably and warm on the self-inflating pad, while my head rests on a non-slipping pillow. As a foam pad for my feet I use a 53cm long piece of a Laufbursche sleeping pad.

What I like about this solution is the successful compromise between insulation, pack size, weight and comfort. As a bonus, the pillow can no longer slide off the sleeping pad at night.

Down to freezing point I use the following components:

Pillow

Sea To Summit 8L stuff sack

Filled with the backpack and the clothes worn during the day

Nordisk Ven 2.5
