Ultralight Hike
The Laufbursche Huckepack is my oldest pack and still the one I use most. My 2011 model has a volume of a good 45 litres. I have owned this pack since about 2014. It has been around for 6 years now, half of them on my back. High time to write a few words about this pack.
The Huckepack is a typical ultralight pack. That means it has no frame or structure to stabilise the contents. The materials are also very thin compared to classic trekking packs. On the back this model has two sleeves to slide in a sleeping pad. These sleeves fit up to six segments of a Therm-A-Rest Z-Lite pad. Thanks to the elastic material of the sleeves, eight segments would fit as well, but then the distance from the pack contents to the shoulders would become too great and carrying comfort would suffer. Over the past years, four to six segments have proven ideal as a back pad.
The mesh pocket on the front of the pack is generously sized and made of elastic material. This pocket holds not only snacks but also rain gear and other material for quick access.
In the lid there is a small compartment. I keep my hygiene kit, first aid kit and a flashlight there so I don't have to search for these things in the main compartment. Thanks to the angled cut, the drink side pockets are reachable while wearing the pack (provided you are flexible enough to get to them…).
The hip fins are made of 3D mesh and keep the pack from swinging while scrambling. The load transfer of these fins is minimal at best. Since an ultralight hiker's pack weight rarely calls for load transfer, and I almost never use the fins myself, this point is not a big deal. I have thought several times about cutting the fins off with scissors.
Without the back pad the pack weighs 470g and has accompanied me on various trips and in everyday life so far. It always comes into play when I need a light pack with a large volume. Thus the pack is ideal for winter trips or when provisions for more than a week are needed.
Since Mateusz, the owner of Laufbursche, is doing a bit better again by now, the great packs should soon be available again in his online shop!
