Ultralight Hike
As is well known, I am at odds with typing on touchscreens, so for blogging on the trail I had to find an alternative. It quickly became clear that I needed a real keyboard. For the keyboard I had the following requirements:
low weight
small packed size
integrated mouse
German keyboard layout
pleasant typing feel
quiet operation
chargeable via USB
After testing a few models, I finally settled on the Jelly Comb Tri Fold. At 119 grams, this model is still acceptable for a mouse-and-keyboard combo. The keyboard consists of three foldable segments. The first segment contains the Tab key and the Q-W-E-R keys, the second segment is for the remaining keys, and the last segment is a touchpad. The keys have a pleasant, noticeable pressure point, which makes typing very comfortable. The keys are relatively quiet and a little smaller than on regular keyboards. According to the manufacturer, the battery life is 180 hours. That value could even be realistic, because I have been using the keyboard for several weeks on a single charge.
Carrying the keyboard along is an absolute luxury on the trail, and one that is worth it to me. I especially enjoy this luxury on zero days, where I can use the smartphone as an acceptable laptop replacement for me. Finally, not only writing messages and blogging from the trail works, but also server administration.
The combination of keyboard, tripod and smartphone has also proven itself on train rides.
All in all, I am absolutely delighted!
